    Notes:

    The War Years
    Cyril enlisted in the 2nd world war in Jan 1941 which meant he was 40 when he joined.
    It is said he lied about his age, but the army would have probably turned a blind eye anyway.

    A quick rundown on his service overseas is below:
    His Army Registration Number was 40979

    1941 - He arrived in Egypt at the Maadi camp in Cairo in May 1941, but was captured on 24th Nov 1941 and put in a POW camp near Tobruk.
    1942 - He was freed by South African troops on 2nd Jan 1942, and returned back to the Maadi camp.
    In March 1942 he transferred to Syria , and then in Oct 1942 he transferred back to the Maadi camp.
    1942-1943 - From Nov 1942 till July 1943 he was stationed in the desert in North Africa, finally ending up back in the Maadi camp.
    1943-1944 - In Nov 1943 he shipped over to Bari in Italy, and in April 1944 he is joined by two of his brothers Ardie (Adolf) and Roly (Roland) who joined his unit.
    1945 - He embarked for home on 17th March 1945 from Tunisia, and arrived in Wellington on 24th April 1945.

    His was discharged from the Army on 3rd August 1945, giving him a total service time of 4 years, and 185 days.

    Notes:

    During the 2nd world war, both Rita and her sister Pat served in the W.A.A.F (Women's Auxiliary Air Force).
    Rita was in the force for 2 years before being discharged on March 26th 1944. Most of the time she was stationed in Levin, then Wellington.
    She was asked to stay on but declined because she knew Tom (Cyril) Omundsen was on his way home from the war overseas.

    Edvart Tobias Omunden left Norway in 1887 and finally settled in New Zealand

    Name:
    Born 12th August 1859, at Frydenlund, Norway. At the age of 16 he went mackerel fishing in the summer and wood cutting on Flekeng Island in the winter. This lasted 2 years then he worked at home until 19 years of age when he finally left in 1879.
    He sailed to South America and back to Kanick in Scotland, then left on an English ship for the East Indies, then back to London where he was paid off.
    From Hamburg he sailed to Baltimore in the USA on a Nova Scotian vessel.
    Paid off and shipped on the same ship for Waterford, Ireland. The ship went on the rocks at Minehead.
    From Barrow he went to Port Augusta in South Australia. The next nine weeks were spent in casual work ashore during which he saw much of Australia.
    He sailed from Port Pirie to Port Natal in South Africa, from there to the West Indies and on to London.
    He then shipped on the ?Glengory?, captained by captain Fisher, for Lyttelton New Zealand, where he berthed in 1882.
    He left the ship as he had had his jaw broken when hit by a boom and conditions aboard the ship were poor.
    He worked on a coaster from Kaiapoi to Waitara taking timber to Kaiapoi and potatoes to Wellington.
    He walked to Carterton and later to Woodville where he worked on the railways.
    Later he took up land at Matahiri in partnership with Max Kaiser. After this he drew a farm at Maharahara where he met Leamon Carter and married her on 25th February 1891.
    They moved to Tipapakuku then Piripiri where he died in 1940, and is buried in the Mangatera cemetery in Dannevirke. His grave is at row ZI Plot No.6

    He was to be buried with his wife Agnes in the Old Town Cemetery in Wanganui, but this was not allowed as the old cemetery had been closed and future burials moved to Aramoho.

    Notes:

    Ommund was the oldest boy and would have inherited the family farm at Greipstad, but he died young at age 37, and his wife Inger Marie Torgjusdr died two years later at age 35.
    The farm was then divided up amongst his three younger brothers.
    His three boys, Sigvald, Ole, and Edvart were looked after by Mette Cathrine (Kattrine) Torgjusdr who was their aunt and the sister of their mother Inger Marie.

    James Carter & Rose Anna Carter were cousins, their mothers were sisters (their fathers were not brothers as most assumed).
    Rose Anna is buried in the Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke, Main Section, Block S, Plot 42

    Rose Anna signed the successful New Zealand Woman's Suffrage petition in 1893. giving the right for woman to vote in the New Zealand general elections.
    She is listed on New Zealand Government History website in the Woman?s Suffrage Petition database.

    Notes:

    Mary Ann was born in a small cottage at the corner of Durham Street and Queen Street in Auckland NZ.
    She is claimed to be the first white girl born in Queen Street.

    Mary Ann lived in Auckland all her life and when she died the property on the corner of Durham & Queen Streets was sold and the proceeds divided among the many descendants. (including 52 grandchildren). Her granddaughter Rita Omundsen (nee Benefield) recalls receiving 13 shillings and four pence and was delighted to spend it on a pair of new bras.

    Her husband James Joseph Murphy died of cancer in Wanganui and is buried there in the old Heads Road Cemetery.
    Mary Ann is buried in the Waikumete Cemetry, Glen Eden Auckland with her infant son Louis. There is no headstone
