- During the 2nd world war, both Rita and her sister Pat served in the W.A.A.F (Women's Auxiliary Air Force).
Rita was in the force for 2 years before being discharged on March 26th 1944. Most of the time she was stationed in Levin, then Wellington.
She was asked to stay on but declined because she knew Tom (Cyril) Omundsen was on his way home from the war overseas.
